According to the statute, failure to comply with the requirements of training constitutes a violation of the Ethics Code. Any public employee who is found to have violated any provision of any law within the jurisdiction of the Ethics Board can be removed, suspended, or ordered to have a reduction in pay or demotion by the Ethics Board. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), also known as the Buckley Amendment, is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education, which is virtually every post-secondary institution in the United States because they receive federal financial aid.
The penalty for non-compliance of FERPA can include the withdrawal of Department of Education funds, including Title IV Funds, from the institution.
This course is divided into four sections: Definitions, Compliance, Exceptions and Assessment. Each section will familiarize you with proper regulatory terminology and compliance practices related to the handling of education records. Knowing the terminology and what is required for basic compliance will better allow you to properly address common FERPA issues.
Upon completion of the e-training, employees will receive a certificate of completion. To access the e-training, click here to self-enroll in the course. Be sure to read all instructions before getting started.
